How To Start Your Car Without Jump Leads If The Battery Is Flat

7/7/2015

Sometimes you may find yourself in a situation where your battery is Almost flat and you have no access to jump leads. Here is another way of starting your car. (MANUAL transmission only!)

Note: if the car has power steering, the steering wont work until the engine starts. This is the same with the brakes after a few presses.

As long as the car attempts to start up this should work. If the battery is completely flat this method will probably not work and you may need to charge the battery up over night.

Step One- Get in the car. Turn off all electric using devices (this does include a charger attached to a phone) take the handbrake off and put the car into second or third gear keeping your foot on the clutch.
Step Two- Switch the ignition on

Step Three- You need a push!! Ask a someone to help you with this

Step Four- When the car is reasonably in motion (5-15 MPH the higher the better. A hill usually helps), take your foot of the clutch and the car will start!

Step Five- Once its started, be careful of what is ahead, push the clutch down and stop. Don’t turn the key off or you will have to repeat the process.

Step Six- Write a comment below if you have ever used this technique to start your car.

If I am not wrong, I think a flat battery is the most typical causes of a car breakdown. Some common causes a flat car battery may include- 1)A short-circuited cell due to the crash of delimiter, 2)State of no charge, 3)Corrosion, 4)Broken internal connection, 5)Low fluid level etc. If your car battery stops working suddenly on the highway, and you don't have any jump leads, then you should follow the above guidelines so that you can start your speed machine. In extreme condition, you can call an auto professional.

Sometimes such a situation comes when the car battery becomes almost flat and there is no facility to jump start the car. In such situations car is started if it has manual transmissions. This is also called bump starting the car. In this process first we have to turn on the ignition, put the car in second gear and keep the clutch depressed. If the car starts in this process then keep the engine running for 20 minutes to charge up the battery. If after two or three attempts the car is not going to start ,then apply other measures and after more attempts, you must replace the battery.

I managed to do this before with a clutch. But I’m not sure if this would work in an automatic car. Any thoughts?

Imagine if we could figure out what's wrong with our car and if it's showing indicators of a near-term failure. Before a big failure, I'm here to tell you that our cars do show us various symptoms and warning signals. Unfortunately, we often take our car's proper operation for granted, and we don't even pay attention to the warning signs it may offer us. After all, even if you're a seasoned mechanic or have just a rudimentary understanding of the subject, you should consider the peculiarities of your vehicle.
