South East London's Premier Driving School
and Driving Instructor Training Centre
Your Local Driving School:
ROYAL (School of Motoring), was started in 1981 by Martin Ferid opening an office in Camberwell shortly after, this was long before speed humps & traffic cameras. It was a time where most people picked up from the office & the AA were a breakdown service, no plumbers or driving instructors yet.
BSM were the benchmark, providing tuition throughout the UK. (Now owned by the AA).
It was felt that a small team of qualified professional instructors with personal skills & a concern for road safety was desperately needed. Royal (School of Motoring) was born.
During 1983 we realised that recruiting qualified driving instructors who were committed in the same way was proving difficult, so we started to learn how to train our own.
Word of mouth had certainly spread and the school grew. In 1987 the government went on to launch ADITE (Approved Driving Instructor Training Establishments) which was a recommended register for driving instructors. We now had to pay and be checked to remain on the register. Of the 500 or so training establishments before ADITE there were about 50 who made the grade afterwards.
Martin Ferid eventually got elected onto the ADITE committee responsible for liaising between the DSA & ADITE membership. ADITE eventually became ORDIT (Official Register of Driving Instructor Training) establishments. So there was now an official register, which the governments recommend.
The reason the instructor training side is so important, is that any driving school is only as good as its driving instructors, about half our driving instructors are ‘home grown’.
In 1989 we opened our second office in Lewisham with more work than we could cope continually expanding but being extremely selective with recruitment policy.
By the mid 1990’s we had cars all over London and the home counties. Over time a number of the many superb long term instructors either retired, moved away or decided on a career change unfortunately some of the new recruits that replaced them used the Royal name and expertise in a hope to ‘get rich quick’ so after a while there was a policy change and we decided to remain in the areas where we had deep routes and run a manageable team of high quality instructors with the original commitments.
As the years went by we were now teaching children of people who had passed with us many years before. In addition we have had a number of pupils who have been so pleased with their driving lessons, that they have later trained to become and instructor and been given a job.
Unlike the AA & some others we specialise in what we do best, tuition for both the theory & practical part of the driving test as well as all three parts of the qualifying examinations to become a driving instructor.
Our commitment is to provide good value tuition in a safe environment therefore enabling us to continue for another 30 years. If you would like to learn to drive or become a driving instructor with a job at the end, call us and MAKE A BOOKING NOW!
